New hi-spec planters replace the hi-vis plastic markers, temporary footpaths and painted asphalt.
Lower Queen Street has undergone the first stage of enhancements since temporary measures were put in place last year to allow physical distancing during the pandemic.
The Wai Horotiu Queen Street Project aims to improve Queen Street for everyone by working with the Queen Street community to shape a more vibrant, user friendly street environment that people want to spend time in. One of the main ways Auckland Council is doing this is by reallocating space on Queen Street (and other city centre streets) to create better areas for people walking, using public transport, and delivering and servicing homes and buildings.
Walkspace’s involvement centered around the supply of 140 steel planters fabricated from Corten Steel and Painted Steel in a variety of heights and diameters. The planters have been carefully nested between the footpath and street creating an informal green barrier. The planters appear to be pretty standard but they are self-wicking meaning they don’t require regular watering and can hold large volumes of water held at the base of each planter.
Each planter, packed with natives will in time create a dense green backdrop.
The project is the first in a series of stages to transform Queen Street as part of a long-term development strategy that’s in line with the City Centre Masterplan.
