Widely regarded as New Zealand’s premier tourist destination, surrounded with outstanding natural beauty Queenstown’s central city streetscape has undergone a radical transformation.
The project delivers on the key outcomes of the Queenstown Masterplan & Queenstown Town Centre Design Guideline manual. Improved walking and cycling connections and facilities, reduced car traffic within the city centre, improved public spaces as well as the use of high quality materials and design, weaving local culture and storytelling.
Lower Beach street has been transformed into a shared space, enhancing social interaction whilst Upper Beach Street remains pedestrian only focused with only service and delivery vehicles able to access. Brecon street has new extended 4-5m wide footpaths to provide safe and pedestrian friendly access to the Gondola and new hotel developments. Rees Street has also received the sharded space treatment prioritising walking and cycling along with new trees and low level planting.
Working with the Wakatipu Transport Project Alliance & Landlab, landscape architects, Walkspace have been involved in the detail design and supply of public street furniture for the project. Bespoke Seats and Benches mounted on granite plinths as well as freestanding versions, BR_02 Bike Racks, TGR_03 Integrated Tree Grates, DF_02 Accessible Drinks Fountains, Handrails and Wayfinding Signage all feature heavily throughout the city centre offering the public key infrastructure to enhance and enjoy the surroundings.
