The new central Christchurch Bus Interchange (CBI) located in the heart of the city takes up the city block bordering Colombo, Lichfield and Tuam Streets. The CBI acts as a major transportation hub with more than 850 trips per day. Similar in approach to modern airports, the CBI offers passengers a safe warm and well illuminated space to wait for the next bus. 5,000 patrons utilised the CBI on opening day, this number is set to increase to 70,000 by 2041.
Walkspace provided full detail design services in regards to the indoor public furniture within the interchange for the supplier Terrazzo + Stoneworks. This included wall seating, stools, tables, precast perches and circular seating. Given the high volume public usage, durability and ergonomics was a key factor in the detail design as was the material and finishes utilised.
